Reggae fans from all over the world are booking flights and accommodation in anticipation of the 30th staging of Reggae Sumfest kicking of July 16th in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Reggae Sumfest has the reputation of being the greatest reggae show on earth, showcasing a stellar line up over its decades long in duration, this year’s decades long production. This year’s line-up includes is no exception, artists include Freddie McGregor, Morgan Heritage and Grammy Winner Kabaka Pyramid. There is an incredible line up over the week-long festival, from Sound Clashes to Street Dance Partys the atmosphere in Montego Bay will be electric. But there is one artist’s performance that I am looking forward to the most, and that’s none other than Minister Marion Hall., formerly known as Dancehall Artist Lady Saw. I had the pleasure of seeing Lady Saw perform on various occasions over the years, the most memorable being Reggae Sumfest 2013. The amazing voice, boundless energy, passion, color, and presence she brings to the stage, the Grammy Award winning artist is also credited as the first female deejay to be certified as triple platinum, travelling the world with her colorful performances, it was no surprise Lady Saw was officially crowned Queen of the Dancehall at the 20th staging of Reggae Sumfest.
Fast forward to 2023 where we will see the artist formerly known as Lady Saw return to the Reggae Sumfest stage as Minister Marion Hall. A transition that began following her baptism in 2015 where she embarked on a new music career writing and performing as a Gospel Artist. Now an established in her chosen genre Minister Marion Hall will be delivering a gospel only set, a first for Reggae Sumfest. New material, new image and new messages aimed at uplifting society and creating a ripple effect of positivity not only amongst Jamaicans, but on a global scale. This is something that has not come without some criticism and controversy from some in the music industry and religious circles. There has even been talk that she will be handing out bibles to some patrons in attendance. I for one can’t wait to see her performance, one thing I know for sure, this is history in the making, the performance will be delivered with the same passion, energy and flair that she has always delivered to captivate her audience. I am looking forward to hearing more new material from Minister Marion Hall as well as some earlier gospel releases such as “Cup of Blessings” and “Sorry to Hurt Your Feelings”. I can only describe her music as Gospel delivered in a true Jamaican style, upbeat, with catchy lyrics, feel good vibes and most definitely danceable. You can catch Minister Marion Halls performance on Night 2 of the 30th staging on Reggae Sumfest, Montego Bay, Jamaica. For more information and tickets head over to reggaesumfest.com and I will see you there for history in the making! Lady Saw came, she saw, and she conquered, Minister Marion Hall is sure to do the same. Love & Blessings Jamarie (aka Lucija M Visic)
