International Reggae Day is an annual event that celebrates Jamaican music culture and its global influence. It is held on July 1st every year since 1994. The event was founded by Andrea Davis, who was inspired by a speech by Winnie Mandela on the role of reggae music in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. International Reggae Day features concerts, festivals, media broadcasts, and other activities that showcase the rich legacy and diversity of reggae music and its artists. The theme for 2023 is “Saluting the Global Influence of 80s and 90s Dancehall: From Brukins to Bogle”. Reggae music is a mix of rhythm and blues, calypso, African, and Latin American music, characterized by a heavy four-beat rhythm and a scraper instrument. Some of the most iconic reggae artists include **Bob Marley and the Wailers**, who brought reggae music to the international stage in the 1970s. In 2018, UNESCO added the “reggae music of Jamaica” to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
